The programme was commissioned to study the psychology of cats and was made on location at a farm in Scotland. The filming of wild cats required “cat cam” cameras to be set up and left unattended for many hours. With only one hour of filming time available on the cameras, a system was required to turn the cameras on only when cats were present. An infrared beam detector was used at the entrance to a barn which, when triggered by a cat entering the doorway, activated the camera using easy-Radio modules.

The design inspiration was to provide a flexible personal communication system for Toby Hewson. Toby is the founder of JUST DIFFERENT, a charity that was started in 2007 to make a positive difference to the lives of disabled and non-disabled people. Toby, aged 28, has cerebral palsy, and cannot walk or speak (except through his pathfinder voice synthesiser) and requires 24 hour care. With no hand ability Toby has to operate the synthesiser just with his elbow. He is very intelligent and articulate with a good sense of humour and has travelled all over the world.

LPRS, Europe’s leading supplier of short-range radio solutions, has been selected to provide wireless control links as part of a manufacturing performance system in use at a major UK aircraft manufacturer. One of a small group of companies involved in this project, (ANDRES) we were tasked with the shop-floor operator push-button input and associated alert sounders section of the installation, known as “RedCard,” (Part of the “Andon” manufacturing process) One of the requirements of this system is the provision of an operator controlled alert system. The original specification to “hardwire” operator push-buttons into the production area proved too expensive and therefore wireless communication became the preferred solution.

The show’s production company gave Peter a brief that offered open access to the entire back-stage area, allowing the robot to roam around at will, interviewing the stars featured in the show as they got ready to perform. The producer envisioned a humanoid robot that could approach artists backstage and engage them in conversation, recording the video and audio for future broadcast.
